Guest Post- Cheryl Hollon

I am thrilled to have Cheryl Hollon here with us today.Cheryl is the author of Webb's Glass Shop Mystery Series. Pane and Suffering and soon to be released Shards of Murder.

Inspiration by Cheryl Hollon

What was the inspiration for the Webb’s Glass Shop Mystery Series? This is a frequent question when I am interviewed. It is one of my favorites because I get to talk about my friends. My cozy mysteries are based on an actual shop in St. Petersburg, Florida in a small business district that stretches along Central Avenue. The name of the real shop is Grand Central Stained Glass & Graphics (www.grandcentralstainedglass.com)www.grandcentralstainedglass.com).

How did this happen? My husband and I have been working with glass for about twenty years. He started working with stained glass, but as he is color blind in the blue-green range, I have always picked out the glass. When he moved into fused glass, we found a new glass shop near us owned by Eloyne and Bradley Ericson. Over the years, our friendship grew and when I was looking for a new idea for a cozy mystery series, I noticed their thriving shop filled with happy crafters and inspiration struck like a thunderbolt. We held the launch party for the series in their shop surrounded by beautiful glass, wonderful friends and new reading fans.

You can read more about Savannah Webb and her friends in Shards of Murder, the second book in the Webb’s Glass Shop Mystery series, published by Kensington Books.

About Shards of Murder:

When a glass-making competition turns deadly, glass shop owner Savannah Webb must search for a window into a criminal’s mind. . .

As the new proprietor of Webb’s Glass Shop, Savannah has been appointed to fill her late father’s shoes as a judge for the Spinnaker Arts Festival, held in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. With her innovative glass works, the clear winner is Megan Loyola, a student of Savannah’s former mentor.

But when Megan doesn’t show up to accept her $25,000 award, rumors start flying. And when Savannah discovers the woman’s dead body on festival grounds, the police immediately suspect her of murder. To keep from appearing before a judge herself, Savannah sorts through the broken pieces of glass scattered around the victim for clues as to who took this killer competition too far. . .

Accusations start flying, but the one laying blame on Erin strikes Charlotte as a crock. Now, to clear her friend’s name, Charlotte has to sift through Lara’s ex-lovers, former business partners, and unforgiving enemies to find a killer before Lara’s past casts a tainted pall on the festival’s future.

This is such a great story and the characters are well developed and strong that keep you wanting more. You will not be disappointed with this read. The author is a fantastic story teller and with the help of her characters she takes you back to Providence Ohio for another case to solve and delicious cheese that will make your mouth water.

I Love Grilled Cheese!
By Avery Aames aka Daryl Wood Gerber

Ever since I started writing the Cheese Shop Mysteries, I have dabbled more in making luscious, savory meals. And I’ve made a ton of grilled cheese sandwiches. In fact, I even made my second Cookbook Nook Mystery revolve around a grilled cheese competition. Fun!

Why? I love a good grilled cheese. There’s something so satisfying about the warmth, the crunch, and the ooze. Now, if you add two other fabulous ingredients, you will be doing your taste buds a huge favor.

Bacon, as we all know, makes everything better. I’m not sure why. The saltiness? The texture? Or the forbidden pleasure because we know, in our hearts, that we’re not supposed to eat too much of it?

Now, if you balance out that bacon with avocado, one of the good-for-you foods, it’s not all bad, right? Did you know that avocados contain mono-unsaturated fat, the type of fat that is healthy and necessary? When you eat healthy fats, it helps boost good cholesterol levels. Yay!

I must say, I am quite good at compromise. I’m also good at making up reasons to eat what I want. I write fiction. It’s in my DNA.

What do you like to indulge in?

Grilled Cheese with Guacamole and Bacon (Makes 2 sandwiches)
4 slices bread
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons cream cheese
1 avocado, mashed up
6 ounces white or orange Cheddar cheese
4 slices bacon, cooked crisply, cut in half

Butter each slice of bread on one side. Spread the cream cheese on the other side of the bread. [Note: This is the inside of the sandwich; the butter side is the outside.]

To assemble: Top two slices of bread, cream cheese side up, with half the mashed up avocado. Place half the Cheddar cheese on top. Place 4 halves of crisp bacon on the cheese. Top with the remaining cheese. Set the other slices of bread on top of the two sandwiches and press slightly.

If cooking on a stovetop: Heat a large skillet over medium heat for about 2 minutes. Set the sandwiches on the skillet and cook for 4 minutes, until golden brown. Flip the sandwiches, using a spatula and being careful not to lose the avocado and other goodies. Cook another 2-4 minutes. You can compress the sandwich with the spatula. Turn the sandwich one more time. Press down with the spatula, and remove from the pan. Let cool about 2-3 minutes, and serve.

If cooking on a panini or sandwich maker: Set the sandwich on the griddle and slowly lower the top. Cook for a total of 4 minutes. Remove from the griddle and let cool 2-3 minutes, then serve. Beware, the insides might ooze out the sides. If the lid is too heavy, you might want to consider resorting to the stovetop method.

Giveaway: Avery aka Daryl is giving away 1 copy of winner’s choice of CHEESE SHOP MYSTERY, including FOR CHEDDAR OR WORSE. Leave a comment and email!

Shelley's Review? Sweet Pepper Hero by J.J.Cook

Shelley's Review? Sweet Pepper Hero( A Sweet Pepper Brigade Mystery Series) by J.J. Cook.

Series: A Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade (Book 4)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Berkley (January 5, 2016)
Language: English

Old rivalries heat up in the fourth Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade mystery from the national bestselling author of In Hot Water.

Fire chief Stella Griffin has been put in charge of judging the annual recipe contest, but Eric—her resident ghost and true culinary genius—has vanished. Before she can track down his latest haunt, she’s called in to investigate a local moonshine distillery that was set ablaze, making her realize there’s more than pies and cakes cooking in Sweet Pepper.

As rumors of a revived whiskey war ignite, Stella turns to the town’s elders to help her find answers. The past might have some clues as to what has sparked the present fires. But when following a lead lands her in buried rubble, Stella realizes she must extinguish this case fast or she might be going down in flames.

Some mysteries are so good that when they are released you drop everything to read them. For me this is one of those mysteries.I love visiting with Chief Stella and the fire house in Tennessee. It is always a welcoming place and the characters are friendly and make this story one you will want to be involved in.

With the recipe judging contest going on and not knowing where Eric went off to and trying to make peace Stella has a lot on her plate. When the moonshine distillery explodes from arson she puts things on hold to find out what happened and resume normal business.

The characters are so well developed and the story is strong and captivating.

While living in Florida, Carol was on assignment for Southern Travel Magazine, preparing an article on the world’s largest sand castle which was being built near her home. That combination of events inspired her first young adult novel, Sand Castle Summer. That book was soon followed by half a dozen more.

Carol has always been an avid reader of mysteries. Her debut mystery novel is set in Salem and involves O’Ryan, a most mysterious cat, several witches and some strange Halloween happenings. Appropriately enough, this Salem-born author celebrates her birthday on Halloween Eve! Carol and her husband Dan live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida with two cats and a Black Lab.

Josie can’t imagine how it stayed open for so long, yet something about the cozy, resilient little shop appeals to her. Blog Tour- Thread and Gone by Lea Wait

Today's blog tour is Thread and Gone( A Mainly Needle Point Mystery Series) by Lea Wait. If you love Needle point or just cozy mysteries you will love this one.

Thread and Gone
(A Mainely Needlepoint Mystery)
3rd in Series
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Kensington (December 29, 2015)

When a priceless antique is stolen, murder unravels the peaceful seaside town of Haven Harbor, Maine…

Angie Curtis and her fellow Mainely Needlepointers know how to enjoy their holidays. But nothing grabs their attention like tying up loose threads. So when Mary Clough drops in on the group’s Fourth of July supper with a question about antique needlepoint she’s discovered in her family Colonial-era home, Angie and her ravelers are happy to look into the matter.

Their best guess is that the mystery piece may have been stitched by Mary, Queen of Scots, famous not just for losing her head, but also for her needlepointing. If they’re right, the piece would be extremely valuable. For safekeeping, Angie turns the piece over to her family lawyer, who places it in her office safe. But when the lawyer is found dead with the safe and ransacked, the real mystery begins. . .

This series is another one of my favorites. It's a Fourth of July party and Angie and her friends are getting ready for the fun. They got more than they bargained for when a mysterious needlepoint piece shows up and the lawyer is found dead after receiving the piece for examination. Angie knows that she has to find out who killed him and what value the piece has. This is a charming and enjoyable read. With it's plot twist and strong story line you will be hooked from the start.

What's New? This weeks upcoming book is A Deadly Tail( A Whiskey, Tango and Fox Trot Mystery) by Dixie Lyle releasing on February 2nd.

Series: A Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Mystery (Book 4)
Mass Market Paperback: 352 pages
Publisher: St. Martin's Paperbacks (February 2, 2016)
Language: English

Deirdre "Foxtrot" Lancaster returns-with her otherworldly animal companions Whiskey and Tango-to shine a light on the dark side of fame...

Foxtrot has seen a lot of strange things as assistant to billionaire Zelda Zoransky at her wacky mansion. And that includes her telepathic cat Tango and ectoplasmic pooch Whiskey. So it's no surprise to find a horde of zombies lurching across the lawn-even if they are just actors in a horror movie that's filming on the mansion grounds. The special effects look pretty convincing. But all that fake blood doesn't fool Whiskey, who quickly sniffs out the truth: one of those corpses is real...

A DEADLY TAIL

Before you can say, "Lights, camera, murder," Foxtrot and her furry partners-in-crime-solving are caught up in the drama of who-killed-who...and why. With a crazy cast of characters including a neurotic director, a star-hungry diva-even with an appearance by Lassie's ghost-it's bound to have one hell of a twist ending. But first, Foxtrot and her supernatural sidekicks have to find a killer amongst them-before the whole case is a wrap...in the next Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot novel from Dixie Lyle. "A clever new series that deftly blends cozy mystery with the paranormal...original and witty."-Ali Brandon, author of the Black Cat Bookshop mysteries

About the Author

Dixie Lyle, author A Taste Fur Murder, To Die Fur, and Marked Fur Murder from the Whiskey, Tango and Foxtrot Mysteries from St. Martin's Books, loves animals, mysteries, books, reading, words, bad puns (are there any other kind?) and once had a torrid summer romance with an entire library. Did I mention the books? Oh, and definitely doesn't believe in the supernatural. Nope, not me. Hey, what was that sound? Where's that spooky green glow coming from? Oh, hello, didn't see you standing there in the corner, what with you being all see-through and everything. Want a cup of tea? Moan once for yes, twice for no. Allegations that Dixie Lyle has a goofy sense of humor are entirely unfounded, and should be forwarded to the unfounded and unlost department.

Synopsis

Author Spotlight- Gail Oust

Happy Tuesday! Today's Spotlight goes to Gail Oust! Gail is the Author of The Spice Shop Mystery Series and the Bunco Babes Mystery Series

About Gail

“Imagination is more important than knowledge” is one of my favorite quotes. Another one should be, “Ignorance is bliss.” I never started out to be a writer. My goal was to become a registered nurse. Having that black band added to my nurses’ cap was literally a crowning achievement. While my education excelled in the nursing arts, it sadly lacked the liberal arts. The only thing remotely close was once doing a research paper on the Sitz bath.

I was a stay-at-home mom while our children were small. Somewhere between the vacuum cleaner and the ironing board, my imagination shifted into high gear. I had stories inside my head that just wouldn’t leave me alone. I’m talking plots, dialogue, characters, and costume, the whole ball of wax. During nap times, I’d take out my old portable typewriter and attempt to put it all down on paper. Well, was I in for a shock! I learned my very first lesson on becoming a writer. I quickly discovered writing—even bad writing--is hard work.

But ultimately my persistence paid off. It wasn’t until I returned to work full-time as a nurse/technologist for a vascular lab that I made my first sale, Sweet Possession, a historical romance under the pseudonym of Elizabeth Turner. Eight more historical romances followed while juggling a family and a job as vascular technologist. It was a busy but rewarding time in my life.

I’ve been happily married for more years than I care to count to my husband, Bob, and have two grown children. In the course of our marriage, we’ve lived in Chicago, upstate New York, and suburban Detroit. A few years ago, my husband and I re-located to another small town, this time one in South Carolina with a community very much like the one inhabited by Kate McCall, the protagonist in my new Bunco Babe Mystery series. Along with a change in locale, I decided to change genres. I’ve been a mystery fan ever since devouring Nancy Drew novels as a girl so the transition from historical romance to cozy mysteries was as fun as it was painless.

As my son reminded me, life’s an adventure. I’m enjoying the ride.

Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Case in point: Piper Prescott's former mother-in-law Melly. News spreads faster than a text message, and Melly is the toast of the town.

But it isn't long before Melly's status changes to public enemy number one when Chip's body is found at the foot of her basement stairs. Questions start to pile up when handsome police chief Wyatt McBride arrives on the scene and the coroner sets the time of death for the previous evening. McBride wants to know why it took Melly so long to report the incident―especially after she admits to arguing with Chip about the contract he wanted her to sign. Piper knows Melly would never hurt a fly, so she enlists the help of her BFF Reba Mae to clear her name―but can they find the real killer before Melly gets sent away for good? A mouth-watering entry in Gail Oust's delicious Spice Shop series, Cinnamon Toasted is sure to delight cozy fans of all stripes.

Cinnamon Toasted is the third book in the Spice Shop mystery and I found this one to be my favorite so far.Piper is the owner of Spice it up and has more than enough on her plate with Ocktoberfest and the play about to be under way, she is really busy. So when Melly finds the body of their friend Chip in the basement she has to add that to the mix as well as clear Melly's name who has become suspect in the murder.
Piper's is at it again as she tries to find out why chip was killed and who did it before all the excitement of the season begins.
Things get heated as you start this book and you will be hooked until the end.

Guest Post:

MYTHBUSTERS Many non-writers, I’ve discovered, have preconceived notions of what a writers’ life is like. I’ve been a published writer for more years than I care to count and along the way I’ve made a number of observations. Here are a few misconceptions I’d like to address:

1. Writers make a lot of money. They’re all rich.
Years ago I saw a listing of the bottom three worst paying jobs. The occupations listed a catholic priest, a migrant worker, and a book author. While I don’t know if the figures still hold true but, except for a small percentage, book authors are NOT rich. OK, so you’re not filthy rich, but you can earn a decent living as a writer. My advice (and advice I’ve often heard other writers repeat) is don’t quit your day job. While an average advance to a writer may sound like a substantial amount, in all likelihood, it will be paid out in installments. How understanding will the water department be when you explain you can’t pay them because your book won’t be released for another nine months?

2. Writers sit down at the keyboard and words start to flow.
“I’ve got the syrup, but it won’t pour,” is a quote I once heard. Words—and ideas—sometimes get stuck in the brain on the way to a page. Sometimes inspiration simply stalls. I wish the brain had a channel called Creativity On Demand. With a deadline looming, writers block isn’t an option. Somehow, someway, a writer has to power through the roadblock.

3. A writer sends out a manuscript and a publisher snaps it up.
Even the rich and famous have had a tough time. “Stick to teaching” was the advice given to Louisa May Alcott about Little Women. “An absurd and uninteresting fantasy which was rubbish and dull” was in a rejection letter sent to William Golding for The Lord of the Flies. And more recently, a literacy agency in England received twelve publishing rejections in a row for a new client. Yet, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling went on to set record sales on both sides of the Atlantic.

4. Writing is a nice little hobby, something to do in your spare time.
Wrong! Writing is a business, a serious business. Writers are self-employed contractors and CEOs of their own small enterprise. In addition to the creative side of writing a novel, there are any number of writing related matters clamoring for attention. Things such as website updating, preparation for workshops, panels, or blog tours, and bookmarks to be designed and ordered. Family and personal life can and do make demands on time and bring unexpected interruptions. I’ve learned to say “no” to a number of things I enjoy such a round of golf with friends, participating in the local book club, or spending a lazy afternoon curled up with a good book.

5. A degree in English is required to write a book.
I won’t deny a degree wouldn’t prove helpful, but I’m proof it isn’t necessary. I was a nurse—a RN--not an English major. When I went through nurses’ training, we studied subjects like anatomy, physiology, microbiology, psychology, and chemistry. Nowhere that I recall were we drilled on the differences between restrictive and nonrestrictive clauses. Instead, I depend on rules taught by Sister Annora back in high school and do the best I can until the words on a page match the visions in my head.

So you might ask yourself if a writer’s life means poor pay, long hours at the computer, and giving up things you enjoy, why do I do it? The answer is simple. I do it because I can’t not do it. Because being a writer—a teller of stories—is who I am.

Author Spotlight- Bailey Cates Cattrell

This weeks spotlight goes out to Bailey Cattrell ( A.k.a. Bailey Cates, Cricket McRae). She writes as Bailey Cattrell with a new series released today. Daisies for Innocence. As Bailey Cates she writes the Magical Bakery Series.

I grew up in the West and earned degrees in philosophy and English from Colorado State University before moving to the Pacific Northwest for twenty years (where the Home Crafting Mysteries are set). I've worked at a variety of jobs, including driver's license examiner, bookseller, and newspaper ad manager.

I traveled the world as a localization program manager for Microsoft, but am now back in Colorado where I currently write the Magical Bakery Mysteries and the Enchanted Garden Mysteries. Shotgun Moon is my only standalone, western mystery. I live with my guy and two felines: Cheesecat the Orange and Minerva the asthmatic wonder kitty.

Like many of my cozy characters, I believe magic is all around us if we only look for it. Having apprenticed with a master herbalist for a year, I'm prone to concocting teas and tinctures for family and friends from the stash of herbs stored in the corner cabinet in my office. I own a working spinning wheel and am on a first name basis with several alpacas and two sheep with questionable dispositions.

For two years, I managed my own soap making company, including product design, manufacturing and marketing. Aromatherapy played a large part in that business, and I have a collection of essential oils next to my herb stash. Unlike the main character in the Enchanted Garden Mysteries, I don't distill my own oils...yet.

When I'm not writing, I love to cook, peruse cookbooks, garden, read, bike and hike the gorgeous terrain outside my door, and have been known to play the occasional round of really bad golf.
